Santorini · Ten days · Twenty years

Santorini, for twenty years

Ten unhurried days from a caldera suite in Fira: the tables worth the walk, the ones worth the drive, and a map of the island you can tilt into 3D.

The base

Athina Luxury Suites, Fira

Fira is the right base for a long stay. It is the island's capital and its bus hub, the caldera path runs north from the door, and nearly every dinner on the island is within a 30-minute drive.

Athina Luxury Suites sits on the caldera rim at the quiet south end of town, on Agiou Mina lane. Its 32 whitewashed suites face west across the drowned volcano, so every evening's sunset is yours from the terrace. From there, Fira's restaurants, sunset bars and the Museum of Prehistoric Thera are two to five minutes on foot. Firostefani is 15 minutes away along the cliff path, and Imerovigli about 30.

The trade-off is that Fira is the busiest village on the island in the late afternoon, when the cruise passengers come up from the Old Port. They are gone by dinner, and the south end of town, where the hotel sits, is the calmest part.

We have assumed “Athena Suites” means Athina Luxury Suites (Athina is the Greek spelling of Athena). If you meant another property, the map and the times below still hold for anywhere in central Fira.

Ten days

A proposed itinerary

Busy days alternate with empty ones, and the most-booked tables fall mid-trip so a weather day can be moved. Tap “Show on the map” on any day to see where it goes.

Day 01

Arrive and do nothing

Morning Transfer from the airport is about 15 minutes. Have the hotel arrange it.

Afternoon Unpack, then watch the first sunset from your own terrace. That is the whole plan.

Evening Dinner two minutes away at Naoussa. Early night.

Day 02

Fira, slowly

Morning Morning: the Museum of Prehistoric Thera, four minutes' walk (closed Tuesdays). See the frescoes before you see the town they came from.

Afternoon Lunch: gyros from Lucky's. Afternoon at the pool.

Evening Sunset at Franco's with a cocktail, then dinner at Argo. A nightcap at Tropical if you have the legs for it.

Day 03

The caldera path north

Morning Walk the cliff path from Fira through Firostefani to Imerovigli: about 2 km, 30 minutes, the best views on the island.

Afternoon Climb out onto Skaros Rock before it gets hot. Lunch on the way back at Aktaion in Firostefani.

Evening Dinner at Athenian House in Imerovigli for sunset, then walk or taxi home along the lit path.

Day 04

Wine country

Morning Book a private driver for the day so you can both taste. Santorini vines grow in low baskets on the ground; you have never seen a vineyard like it.

Afternoon Gavalas, then lunch at Alisachni or Feggera in Megalochori, then a stroll through the village.

Evening Finish with the cliff-side terrace at Venetsanos (or Santo Wines) for sunset.

Day 05

A day on the water

Morning A slow morning. Most sunset catamarans pick you up from the hotel in the early afternoon.

Afternoon A semi-private sail stops below the Red Beach and the White Beach and at the volcanic hot springs, with dinner on board, and comes back past Oia at sunset.

Evening Want to hike the volcano itself? Take the cable car down to the Old Port another morning for a Nea Kameni boat.

Day 09

Oia, done right

Morning Early afternoon: a tasting at Domaine Sigalas among the vines outside Oia.

Afternoon Wander Oia late in the day, with Atlantis Books and the castle, but skip the sunset scrum at the top.

Evening Instead take the 300 steps down to Ammoudi Bay and watch the sunset from a waterside table at Ammoudi Fish Tavern. For the bigger night, Lycabettus. Taxi back, pre-booked.

Day 10

The east side, and a last dance

Morning Ancient Thera in the morning (8:30–3:30, closed Wednesdays): ruins on a ridge high above the sea.

Afternoon Down to Kamari's black-pebble beach for a swim and lunch on the promenade, then a tasting at Estate Argyros.

Evening Farewell dinner at Metaxy Mas in Exo Gonia. Back in Fira, Koo Club if you want to end the trip dancing.

Ten days is a lot of Santorini, and that is the point. If you want a change of scene, give two of the quiet days to a night on Folegandros or Milos by high-speed ferry, then come back for the anniversary dinner.

The big nights

Where to celebrate

Four tables for the anniversary, two walkable and two a short drive. Book all of them before you fly. Caldera tables at sunset go first.

  • SelenePyrgos · about 15 min drive · €€€€The island's culinary institution, cooking Santorini's own produce: fava, cherry tomatoes, capers. One diner reported €125 a head for three courses à la carte and €210 for the long tasting menu.
  • LycabettusOia · about 25 min drive · €€€€Tables at the very edge of the cliff in Oia. Pair it with the Ammoudi sunset and a pre-booked taxi.
  • KoukoumavlosFira · 2 min walk · €€€€Long-running creative Greek cooking on a caldera terrace. The big night that needs no car.
  • Athenian HouseImerovigli · 30 min walk · €€€€A restored mansion with a sunset terrace. Walk there along the cliff path, and get a taxi home if you like.

After dark

Nightlife

Fira is the island's night-time hub, which is the other advantage of staying there. Everything below is a short walk from the hotel, so nobody needs to drive. Smart casual is the norm at the better places.

  • Franco'sSunset · 4 min walkThe classic Fira sunset: tiered terraces, cocktails and classical music.
  • PK Cocktail BarSunset into night · FiraA cocktail bar with a meze kitchen and a sunset terrace on the caldera edge.
  • Tropical BarLate · 4 min walkStarts with caldera views and turns into a rock-and-roll bar after dark.
  • Two BrothersLate · FiraThe loud, cheerful late-night bar everyone ends up at once.
  • Koo ClubDancing · 5 min walkThe island's best-known club, with an indoor floor and an open-air patio with three bars.
  • Open-air cinema, KamariSeasonal · about 15 min driveFilms under the stars in a garden. It is seasonal, so check whether it is still showing in your weeks.

Getting around

Transport

You need a car for about four of the ten days. Fira's caldera lanes are pedestrian-only and parking there is hard, so the easiest plan is a private driver for the wine day and the big dinners, the bus or a taxi for the rest, and no rental car at all.

OptionCostGood for
On footFreeAll of Fira, plus Firostefani (15 min) and Imerovigli (30 min) along the lit cliff path. The full path to Oia takes 3–4 hours. Start early.
KTEL bus€2.20–2.70Fira is the hub, about 5 minutes' walk from the hotel. €2.20 to Oia, the airport, Kamari, Pyrgos and Megalochori; €2.70 to Perissa, Vlychada and Athinios. Pay cash on board.
Taxi€25–35 airportFixed fares, not metered, so agree the price first. There are few taxis on the island and they are hard to find after dinner, so pre-book every return trip. Central line: +30 22860 22555.
Private driverAsk the hotelThe right answer for the wine day, Selene and the Oia night: nobody drives, nobody waits for a taxi.
Rental car€35–60 / dayOptional, for the Akrotiri day and the east side. Roads are narrow and parking in Fira and Oia is tight. Skip ATVs.

Before you fly

What to book, and when

  1. The suite, about three months ahead for October and four to six months for September. Ask for a caldera-facing suite, and tell them it's your 20th anniversary.
  2. Selene, Lycabettus and any caldera-edge sunset table, as soon as reservations open. Ask for the edge.
  3. Santo Wines sunset slot (4–6 weeks ahead), and the catamaran for a day early in the trip, so the wind has room to move it.
  4. A private driver for the wine day and the two big dinners, through the hotel.
  5. Akrotiri e-tickets for a Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday to Sunday, when it opens at 8:00.
  6. Return taxis for every dinner outside Fira, booked when you sit down. Don't count on finding one at 11 pm.
